The St Albans Spurs (formerly Sunshine YCW) is a proud women’s football club with two teams competing in the Victorian Women’s Football League, as well as a youth girls’ team and an under-13s side.
The club is a pioneer, taking pride in being the first female football club established in Melbourne’s western suburbs back in 1993.
Since then, the Club has flourished providing young girls and women with the opportunity to play the great game of Aussie Rules. It has developed a culture of success in the last two years, winning premierships in both 2011 and 2012 across the VWFL Premier Division.
The Spurs are a community club that prides itself on providing opportunities beyond the playing field; it’s a club that is based on much more than football, focusing on developing players as footballers and people. We love a good challenge; we thrive on setting the benchmark and aim to create history.
Our vision includes you.
Our next challenge is to take the game internationally; we want to be the first AFL senior women’s team to tour the USA and take on the New York Magpies as well as teams from Boston & Washington. We want to share the Australian culture and our own experiences through footy, but also create new experiences. We want to contribute to the game and develop not only female footy, but women’s sport as a whole
For whatever reason women are marginalized, there are many examples of this and sport, and in particular women’s football is no different, whilst it is changing, more still needs to be done. Here is a great opportunity for you to actively show your support for women’s sport and in particular women’s footy.
Become a part of history, join the Team Bus today and throw your support behind women’s footy!
