We are the 2013 Team Australia Skillaroos. We are comprised of 32 of the nation’s most talented young apprentices and trainees representing 29 different trade and skill areas. After what has been an exciting journey, we are now on our way to Germany to compete in what is commonly referred to as the ‘Skills Olympics’, the 42nd WorldSkills International Competition which will be held in Leipzig this July.
Over four challenging days of competition, before an anticipated 200,000 spectators, each of us will put our skills to the ultimate test against the world’s best skill and trade technicians from up to 65 competing countries.
On our team we have a florist, a bricklayer, two landscape gardeners, a web designer, a car painter, a plumber, a beauty therapist and the list goes on. You can meet and learn all about each and every one of us through the WorldSkills Australia website.
"Just as swimmers need their swimsuits and sprinters need their spikes, so too do our Landscapers need their shovels, our Hairdresser need her mannequin heads and our welder needs his helmet and welding gun."
We were given the incredible opportunity to represent Australia on the international stage after our medal winning performances both at our local competitions held across the nation in 2011 and at the 2012 WorldSkills Australia National Competition held in Sydney.
Since our national wins, each of us have been training rigorously with our trainers and international experts to refine our skills in the hope of claiming the gold medal in Germany and the title of ‘World Champion’ as well as defending Australia’s ranking as the 7th most highly skilled nation in the world.
Help us to get our toolboxes to Germany!
We, the Skillaroos, are often likened to Olympic athletes in our preparations for the international competition. Just like any Olympic athlete, we must sacrifice, train tirelessly and continue to strive for excellence as we work towards perfecting our skills for the competition.
The similarity also extends to the important equipment we carry with us to competitions, which is imperative to our ultimate goal of achieving international success.
Just as swimmers need their swimsuits and sprinters need their spikes, so too do our Landscapers need their shovels, our Hairdresser need her mannequin heads and our welder needs his helmet and welding gun.
We would be unable to compete at the WorldSkills International competition without these crucial tools and some of our toolboxes can measure 150cm long 60cm wide and 70cm deep and can weigh anywhere up to 300 kilograms.
It is estimated that cost of shipping all of our toolboxes will exceed $50,000 and we need your help to get them over there.
Please support us as we prepare to embark on the biggest career challenge of our lives.
By funding the cost of getting our toolboxes all the way to Germany you are significantly helping us on our journey as we strive towards bringing home gold for Australia.
