The Melbourne Football Club is a pioneer of women’s football and has been at the forefront of the sport’s development. The club actively pushed for a women’s national competition for a sustained period of time and saw its efforts come to fruition in the form of the inaugural AFL Women’s Match in 2013.
This year, Melbourne will take on the Western Bulldogs at the MCG in round eight and at Etihad Stadium for the return fixture in round 20.
Melbourne retained the following six players for 2015: Daisy Pearce (VIC), Melissa Hickey (VIC), Kara Donnellan (WA), Chelsea Randall (WA), Kirby Bentley (WA) and Tayla Harris (QLD).
The remainder of Melbourne’s playing list was filled at the third annual AFL Women’s Draft on Monday 20 April, 2015.
Michelle Cowan will again be the side’s senior coach in 2015. All of Melbourne’s coaching staff from the 2014 victory – Narelle Smith (back line), Martine Pearman (midfield), Shaun O’Loughlin (midfield), Adrian Pavese (forward line) and Andy Hood (development coach). – have been retained.
Melbourne has added five players to its women’s list ahead of the second AFL Women’s Game at the 2015 mini-draft. Having delisted five players from the side that defeated the Western Bulldogs in May, Melbourne took the opportunity to further bolster its midfield with its first pick, drafting Victorian Brittany Bonnici with pick no. 2 overall.
With its other four picks, Melbourne selected two talls in Sabrina Frederick-Traub and Tiana Ernst, along with two running players in Jenna Bruton and Jessica Dal Pos.
